1. The Miley Cyrus Wrecking Ball
From her “Wrecking Ball” video to the twerking incident with Robin Thicke at the VMAs, Miley made us all squirm in 2013. Photographer Terry Richardson took scandalous photos and directed her infamous “Wrecking Ball” video in which she rides a cannonball while half-naked and licks hammers and chains. It worked, Miley – you made the headlines.
2. All Things Kardashian
Is it us, or does there seem to be a Kardashian scandal (or two… or three) every year? This year was no exception, but for once, the scandals had nothing to do with Kim. Mama Kris made headlines as her marriage with Bruce Jenner crumbled.
The pair announced their separation in October after living apart for some time. Late 2013 was also fraught with reports of Khloe’s husband Lamar Odom cheating while allegedly using drugs. In December, Khloe filed for divorce.
3. Justin Bieber’s Exploits
Justin Bieber was still grabbing headlines in 2013 as well, but they never seemed to be about music. Reports were either about him stirring up trouble in his own neighborhood with fast cars or his exploits overseas while on tour.
He spray painted buildings in Australia, rode the Great Wall of China and was seen leaving a brothel in Brazil — a far cry from that cute Canadian kid who won our hearts on YouTube.
4. A Baby Prince
Before he was even born, Prince George of Cambridge was grabbing headlines. The moment Kate Middleton announced she was pregnant, the world seemed to be in a frenzy, waiting for every new detail. The day of Prince George’s birth was covered live through news, internet and social media as Britain celebrated.
5. Lindsay Lohan’s (Latest) Comeback
The first half of 2013 was tough for Lindsay Lohan, as she spent the better part of it in court-mandated rehab. After her release, Oprah and the OWN Network secured the first interview with the troubled starlet.
Many hoped the sit-down would be a pivotal media event and a positive turning point for Lindsay. While the interview ended up being mostly hype, a docu-reality series about Lindsay’s recovery is (supposedly) in the works at OWN.
6. Angelina Jolie’s Double Mastectomy
While some might argue celebrities should stay out of the world of health and medicine, Angelina Jolie stunned with an op-ed piece in the New York Times about her preemptive strike against cancer.
Her move launched a worldwide discussion, with some believing she was a positive role model and others arguing she made the wrong decision. However you see it, there’s now a louder voice and an active dialogue about the issue.
7. Amanda Bynes Wigs Out
What started out as a strange but entertaining train wreck on Twitter (remember all those great wig pics?) turned out to be a far more serious issue. Theories about what happened to Amanda range from the onset of schizophrenia to MK Ultra mind control run amok. Whatever it is, we hope she gets better soon.
8. Those We Lost
We lost many celebrities in 2013, but some of the most startling included Cory Monteith, James Gandolfini and Paul Walker. In a way, we “get to know” actors onscreen, so when they’re lost unexpectedly, tragically or too young, it takes some time to process. Rest in peace.
9. Beyonce’s Big Surprise(s)
At the end of 2013, Beyonce pulled off the unthinkable – she released a surprise full-length visual album. She outdid Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus with that one as she managed to keep the album a secret until it was released. (Oh, and Beyonce also cut her hair pretty short in 2013 – remember that, earlier in the year? Maybe not – she was wearing a weave again within a week.)
10. Baby North West
Many had reservations about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West as a couple; was the relationship real, or just for TV? Well, Kim’s pregnancy and the birth of their daughter North “Nori” West were definitely real; the pictures on Instagram prove it.
