Selena Gomez On Her Recent Struggles: ‘And I Was Absolutely Broken Inside’

December 12, 2016

Selena Gomez has spent the second part of 2016 away from the public eye. In August, the singer explained that she wanted to focus on her lupus-related side effects after her “Revival” world tour ended, and she did just that – she made a serious break from the spotlight in order to work on herself.

“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways,” she told People magazine. “I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.”

“I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. Thank you to all my fans for your support.”

However, Selena decided to make her fans happy this weekend, and she did it with style.

If You Are Broken, You Do Not Have To Stay Broken

After spending several months away from high-profile public events and social media, the pop star showed up for the 2016 American Music Awards and snatched one of the biggest awards of the evening.

But Selena didn’t focus her speech on the award.

Instead, she took the opportunity to address her fans and people who might be experiencing similar struggles of their own.

“I think it’s safe to say most of you know my life whether I liked it or not. And I had to stop. Because I had everything. And I was absolutely broken inside,” Selena said.

“I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down. If you are broken, you do not have to stay broken. That’s one thing you should know about me: I care about people. And this is for you.”
