In an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes”, Sean Penn discussed his mission of tracking down a fugitive Mexican drug lord known as ‘El Chapo’, and writing about him for “Rolling Stone” magazine.

Penn said that his intention was to initiate a discussion on the U.S. government’s policy on the War of Drugs. Instead, the public has been focusing on the fact that Sean Penn had a seven-hour sit down with ‘El Chapo’ in the Mexican mountains last October, while the kingpin was still on the run.

Penn concluded that his mission “failed”.

As “El Chapo” was apprehended last week after evading Mexican officials for six months, Sean Penn has been drawn into a controversy over whether he took part in capturing the drug lord or helped him remain a fugitive for a little while longer as Penn, clearly, didn’t say anything about their meeting until the article was published last week.

As to why “El Chapo” agreed to meet with Penn, certain sources claim he was interested in having a movie made about him. Others say he actually wanted to meet the liaison who made the interview with Penn possible, a Mexican actress by the name of Kate del Castillo, with whom “El Chapo” openly flirted via text messages.

“I have a regret that the entire discussion about this article ignores its purpose, which was to try to contribute to this discussion about the policy in the War on Drugs,” Penn said.
