Matthew Perry Talks Getting Sober

August 21, 2015

Although most of us know Matthew Perry the best from his role of funnyman Chandler from the popular TV show “Friends,” his real life story is everything but a joke.

The 46-year-old actor was presented with the 2015 Phoenix Rising Award yesterday, which was give to him by Phoenix House, a nonprofit drug and alcohol rehabilitation organization.

While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Perry opened up about his past substance abuse and how that reflects on him today.

Said the actor: “I’m an award-winning alcoholic, I guess. I shouldn’t be getting an award; Phoenix House should be getting an award.”

Perry toured Phoenix House’s facilities and saw that everyone who was there for help had an actual chance at recovering.

He added: “Getting sober is a really hard thing to do, and I saw hope on the faces of the kids.”

Now that he’s sober again, Perry is doing all he can to help others while also having small screen appearances. “I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my life and a lot of wonderful accolades, but the best thing about me is that if an alcoholic comes up to me and says, ‘Will you help me stop drinking?’ I will say, ‘Yes. I know how to do that.’

“The Whole Nine Yards” star hasn’t only given up on abusing drugs and alcohol, but is successfully transferring that decision to many others. Good for you, Matthew!
