Born on 3 August 1948, Jean-Pierre Raffarin served as the Prime Minister of France from 6 May 2002 to 31 May 2005. He is also a renowned French conservative politician and the senator of Vienne.
Jean-Pierre Raffarin came into international highlight when he resigned from the Prime Minister's office after France was rejected from the European Union draft constitution. Jean-Pierre Raffarin was also the most unpopular Prime minister of France who was voted out in the opinion polls.
Private life
He was born in Poitiers, France and studied law at the University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas. Later he graduated from the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris business school. He started his professional career in marketing. Jean-Pierre Raffarin is married to Anne-Marie Perrier and has a daughter, Fleur.
Career
He came in contact with the association of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing's young supporters in 1970, and gave his first politically motivated speech. He joined the Republican Party, and the liberal-conservative component of the center-right confederation Union for French Democracy (UDF). He was elected as the regional council head of state in 1980. Seven years later, he was elected senator of Vienne department.
In the presidential campaign of 1995, he was appointed as Minister of Small and Medium-sized Companies, Commerce and Craft Industry in Alain Juppé's cabinet (1995-1997).
Alter on, he joined the Republican Party, and became the vice-president of DL until 2002. During his tenure as the Prime minister, he brought about significant policies which combined authority and moderate economical liberalism.
Raffarin's rule was known for its never ending internal quarrels, with various ministers taking opposite positions in public. The alleged lack of authority of the Prime Minister was mocked by part of the media.
On 28 March 2004, Jean-Pierre Raffarin lost the elections and his party was ousted from the government from all the 22 states as a sign of distrust by the common people.
