Biography
Jean-Bertrand Aristide is a Haitian politician who was the President of Haiti. He also served as a former Roman Catholic priest. Jean-Bertrand Aristide is very popular among his people oh Haiti. During his tenure as a president, he was overthrown by a military group twice. He alleged that United States played a significant role in his exile in South Africa, and the US forces had kidnapped him.

Education

Jean-Bertrand Aristide was born in Port Salut and received his education at the local Salesian schools. He later joined the Notre Dame College where he graduated with honors. Later after completing his post graduation, he traveled to Italy and Israel to become a priest.

Career

He joined a small parish church as a curate and worked hard for the poor people and soon earned the title of "Titide" or "Titid". He became a national figure with his sermons on the TV show and his speech against the US government. Later on, he left his priesthood and married Mildred Trouillot, a US citizen, with whom he now has two daughters.

Jean-Bertrand Aristide was elected as the president in 1990 with 67% of the vote. He was the first democratically elected leader in the country. On September, a rebel group led by Raoul Cédras, overthrown the democratic government and seized the power. Many people fled from Haiti, to U.S. but were not allowed to enter as refugees.
On February 7, 2001, Aristide was sworn in for his second term as President of Haiti. The country's economy was sloping down with a great speed and due to the increasing discontent, riots started and Jean-Bertrand Aristide had to leave the country.
On May 31, 2004, Aristide and his family flew to Johannesburg, South Africa.
After René Préval, a former ally of Aristide, won the presidential elections and Jean-Bertrand Aristide returned back to his conutry.
