Despite being born in Boston, Jasmine Guy grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. After she finished going to Northside High School, Jasmine Guy attended Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York City. Her first appearance on screen was in the television series "Fame" (a spin off of the movie) in 1982, where she appeared as a dancer in ten episodes. Jasmine Guy found other small parts during the late eighties, particularly in made for TV movies like "At Mother's Request", "Runaway" and "A Killer Among Us", before her career as an actress took off with her casting as Whitley Marion Gilbert Wayne on the sitcom "A Different World".
