Janet Jackson is a singer / songwriter, dancer, actress and music producer. She is the youngest of the famous Jacksons.
Janet Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana in the year 1966. Her birthday is the sixteenth of May. When she was born as the youngest of nine children, her older brothers were already performing as the Jackson Five. Janet Jackson was three years old when the Jackson Five started having hit singles with Motown Records. She made her first on stage appearance when she was eight years old in a family performance at the Las Vegas MGM Grand. The next year, Janet Jackson wrote her first song. Her debut album was released in 1982 when she was sixteen; it was successful on the R&B charts but not considered a large scale pop success. The same thing happened with her follow up album "Dream Street".
With her third album entitled "Control", Janet Jackson finally had a hit record, with five high charting singles. The album was produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and the music videos were choreographed by Paula Abdul. It was nominated for the Album of the Year Grammy. Firing her father as her manager, Janet Jackson took control of her own career from this point on, leaving A&M Records and joining Virgin Records in the largest recording deal of all time. During the nineties Janet Jackson continued to produce pop hits on albums like "Rhythm Nation 1814", "janet." and "The Velvet Rope". Her albums consistently went multiplatinum and her tours were high grossing. After a short dip in popularity at the end of the millennium, Janet Jackson came back in a big way with "All for You", which debuted at the top of the charts in 2001.
In 2004, Janet Jackson was involved in a wardrobe malfunction during her performance with Justin Timberlake at the Super Bowl halftime show. The outcry after the incident, in which Janet Jackson's breast was exposed on national TV, caused a crackdown in censorship and fines by the FCC that lasted for the year following. Since the incident, Janet Jackson's albums have continued to sell extremely well. She has also become one of the most searched for people on the internet.
As of early 2007 Janet Jackson continues to produce music. However her most recent album "20 Y.O.", released in 2006 hasn't done as well as expected. It is possible that Janet Jackson will change labels in the near future and she has not yet decided whether she will tour in support of the latest album.
