Biography
James Stewart was an American actor. He is one of the most famous actors in the history of American cinema, and many of his performances are considered iconic. His best known leading roles were as embattled everyman senator Jefferson Smith in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", and down on his luck George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life".
James Stewart was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania in the year 1908. His birthday is the twentieth of May. After graduating from Mercersburg Academy, James Stewart attended Princeton University where he joined the Princeton Triangle Club (now the oldest musical comedy troupe in America) and the University Players. At twenty six years old James Stewart moved to New York City where he lived with Henry Fonda and Joshua Logan and pursued stage roles.
Early stage roles for Stewart included "Goodbye Again", "Page Miss Glory" and "Yellow Jack". These brought him to the attention of Metro Goldwyn Mayer, though he was not very successful in their pictures. James Stewart became a Hollywood success when he started appearing in Frank Capra films produced by Columbia Pictures. Movies like "You Can't Take It With You" and especially "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" made James Stewart nationally popular and critically acclaimed. He also appeared in the movies "The Shop Around the Corner", "Destry Rides Again", and "The Philadelphia Story", before enlisting in the Army during the Second World War (though he was never sent into combat). James Stewart was the first movie star to join the army.
After returning from the Army after World War II, James Stewart became a free agent, which was unusual at the time. His first film upon returning was another Frank Capra movie "It's a Wonderful Life". The film has since become a Christmas time classic. James Stewart's character George Bailey is depressed by terrible financial problems and decides to commit suicide on Christmas Eve. He is stopped by an angel who shows him that although there are problems in his life, he has a loving family and he has had a strong positive impact on his town. Other movies that James Stewart appeared in over the following years included "Harvey", "Broken Arrow", "The Greatest Show on Earth" and several Hitchcock films including "Vertigo", "Rope", "Rear Window" and "The Man Who Knew Too Much".
James Stewart died in 1997 of cardiac arrest at the age of 89, remembered as one of the greatest actors of the twentieth century.
