Biography
James Garner is an American actor. He has appeared in numerous film and television roles and his career has spanned more than fifty years. He is best known for his popular starring roles in the TV series "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files", as well as for being cast in numerous tough hero roles in films like "The Great Escape".
James Garner was born in Norman, Oklahoma in the year 1928. His birthday is the seventh of April. James Garner's early life was stressful, as his mother died when he was four years old and he was beaten and humiliated by his stepmother for several years until his father divorced her. James Garner worked in the Merchant Marine as a young man and ultimately graduated from Hollywood High School, where he met a friend who later convinced him to appear in the Broadway play "The Caine Mutiny Court Martial". James Garner became interested in acting while performing the small non-speaking role which allowed him to see what the actors did up close. He started to pursue an acting career finding work in commercials and small parts in television and movies.
"Maverick" was James Garner's first big success after several years of appearing in supporting roles. The show brought James Garner to national attention as the character of professional gambler Bret Maverick. James Garner left the show in the middle of the third season, and appeared in starring roles of movies for the rest of the sixties. Some of the movies that James Garner appeared in during his heyday were "The Thrill of It All", "Boys' Night Out", "Move Over, Darling", "The Art of Love", "Support Your Local Sheriff!" and "The Great Escape".
During the seventies, James Garner appeared in the single season of the unusual western "Nichols", and "The Rockford Files", a reinterpretation of "Maverick" as a private detective. James Garner won the Emmy Award for this role.
As of early 2007 James Garner continues to appear in films. While his career has slowed over the eighties and nineties he has had movie roles in "Murphy's Romance", "Barbarians at the Gate", "My Fellow Americans", "Space Cowboys" and "The Notebook".
