Biography
James Gandolfini is an American actor. He is best known for playing the part of Tony Soprano on "The Sopranos", and he has won the Emmy Award three times. Throughout his career he has tended to play mobsters and tough guys with an unusual depth of character.
James Gandolfini was born in Westwood, New Jersey in the year 1961. His birthday is the eighteenth of September. He first became interested in acting through a friend who was taking an acting class. James Gandolfini pursued an acting career as a young man after graduating from Rutgers University with a Bachelors of Arts Degree. His early career was in New York City where he appeared in Broadway productions such as "A Streetcar Named Desire" in the early nineties. During this time he also started to appear in film roles such as "A Stranger Among Us", "Money for Nothing", "Terminal Velocity", "Crimson Tide", "Get Shorty", and "True Romance". "True Romance", the first film to be produced from a Quentin Tarantino screenplay, was one of James Gandolfini's early establishing roles as he played a conscientious hit man and brought an unusual edge to what could have been a simple part.
During the later nineties James Gandolfini would continue to appear steadily in film roles that included "12 Angry Men", "A Civil Action", "The Juror", "Night Falls on Manhattan", and "She's So Lovely". He had a particularly high profile appearance in 1999 as a pornographer in the film "8mm". That same year, James Gandolfini found his breakout role as the star of the surprise runaway hit series "The Sopranos". As the head of the titular family, James Gandolfini's character has to deal with issues of being a family while running the mob. The show combined dark elements with comedy and James Gandolfini's strong ongoing performance in the role helped to make it one of the most influential television series of the early twentieth century.
As of early 2007 James Gandolfini continues to work in film and on television, still appearing in "The Sopranos" and in various Hollywood movies such as "The Man Who Wasn't There", "Surviving Christmas" and "Romance and Cigarettes".
