Biography
James Dean was an actor in American film. He is one of America's cultural icons as a result of his appearance in the 1955 film "Rebel Without a Cause". Dying at a young age in a car crash, James Dean was posthumously nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.
James Dean was born in Marion, Indiana in the year 1931. His birthday is the eighth of February. In high school, James Dean played baseball and basketball and excelled in drama. He enjoyed racing and going to the movies. After he graduated from high school he moved to California and attended Santa Monica College, later transferring to UCLA to major in drama. At the age of twenty, James Dean dropped out of UCLA and started pursuing an acting career directly.
The first role that James Dean appeared in was in a TV commercial for Coca-Cola. He also had numerous small movie roles before becoming well known, which included "Fixed Bayonets!", "Sailor Beware", "Has Anybody Seen My Gal?" and "Trouble Along the Way". James Dean finally found his big break in the movie "East of Eden", where James Dean played a young man who had a troubled relationship with his father (this role paralleled James Dean's actual life). "East of Eden", released in 1955, was one of James Dean's posthumous Academy Award nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
The next movie that James Dean appeared in would be his most famous, "Rebel Without a Cause". "Rebel Without a Cause" was one of the first movies to establish the reality of rebellious teenage youth, portraying it in a way that was accurate to the period. It was extremely popular with teenagers of the era and has become an iconic part of American culture.
James Dean appeared in one more role in the movie "Giant", which was released the following year after his death. James Dean was artificially aged for the role and received a second posthumous Academy Award nomination for it, giving him the record as of 2007 for the highest number of posthumous Academy Award nominations at two. James Dean died in a head on collision while preparing for a car race, driving his Porsche 550 Spyder. His sudden rise to national fame and tragic death along with the iconic nature of his best performances have cemented his in American consciousness.
