Biography
James Caan is a Hollywood actor who has appeared in numerous film and television roles. His most famous role was as the character Sonny Corleone in "The Godfather". James Caan has been nominated for the Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy.
James Caan was born in the Bronx neighborhood of New York City in the year 1940. His birthday is the twenty sixth of March. After graduating with a major in economics from Michigan State University and studying at Hofstra University, James Caan joined Sanford Meisner's Neighborhood Playhouse and appeared in various off-Broadway productions.
In the early sixties, James Caan started to land film roles including "Red Line 7000" and "El Dorado". He also had one off roles in various TV series of the sixties including "The Wide Country", "Naked City", "Route 66", "Alcoa Premiere", "Dr. Kildare" and "The Wide Country". James Caan's critical appeal increased with roles in 1969's "The Rain People", where he played a brain-damaged football player, and "Brian's Song", where he played a dying football player. These parts demonstrated that he could bring another dimension to tough guy roles. On the strength of those, he was cast as Sonny Corleone in the film "The Godfather", a mobster epic that regularly tops lists of the best movies of all time.
Following "The Godfather", James Caan was able to easily obtain prominent work in Hollywood films such as "Cinderella Liberty", "A Bridge Too Far", "Chapter Two" and "Rollerball". He has also appeared in "Dick Tracy", "Misery" (a Stephen King story in which he played a writer trapped by a psychotic fan), "Bottle Rocket" (an indie film that launched the career of Wes Anderson) and the Arnold Schwarzenegger action film "Eraser".
As of early 2007 James Caan continues to appear in films and occasional television roles. One of his better known ongoing roles is as the head security officer of a casino in the series "Las Vegas", which he has played since 2003.
