Biography
James Brown was one of the most popular American musicians of the twentieth century. He is best known for his energetic soul music and many popular hit songs released over the course of several decades. James Brown's career stretched over fifty years of constant popularity, from the 1950s until his death in late 2006.
James Brown was born in Barnwell, South Carolina in the year 1933. His birthday is the third of May. He started his music career after a rocky youth - he spent three years in jail from the age of sixteen after being convicted of armed robbery, ultimately being released from prison early as a result of good behavior and his actions as the leader of a soul music quartet while serving time. After his release from jail in the early fifties, James Brown put together a group called "The Gospel Starlighters", whose first single "Please, Please, Please" was a platinum hit. Changing their name to "James Brown & the Famous Flames", the band had another hit with "Try Me" in 1958. During the sixties, James Brown gained more influence over his relationship with his record label and released numerous classic hits including "Night Train", "Prisoner of Love", "Out of Sight", "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)",and "Cold Sweat".
In the seventies, James Brown's backing band changed, and he moved to Polydor Records where he continued to record hits like "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine", "Hot Pants (She Got To Use What She Got To Get What She Wants)", and "Hot (I Need To Be Loved, Loved, Loved, Loved, Loved)". Throughout the eighties and nineties, James Brown had various run-ins with the law but recorded many live albums and collections of earlier classic hits, as well as new songs that performed well on the charts.
James Brown was married four times over the course of his life and ended with eight children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He died of heart failure in late 2006 and was greatly mourned in America and throughout the world. He is remembered as one of the world's greatest entertainers.
