Biography
Jake Gyllenhaal is an American actor who has appeared in a wide range of critically acclaimed roles despite still being quite young. He has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and has won the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor as well as several more minor film awards. His best known roles include the title role in the cult hit "Donnie Darko", as well as the high profile part of a gay cowboy in "Brokeback Mountain", and recently as the star of the critically acclaimed thriller "Zodiac" about the San Francisco Zodiac serial killings.
Jake Gyllenhaal was born in Los Angeles, California in the year 1980. His birthday is the nineteenth of December. Both of Jake Gyllenhaal's parents are involved in the movie industry, with his father, Stephen Gyllenhaal being a director and his mother Naomi Foner being a screenwriter and producer. Growing up in Los Angeles in this kind of family, it was easy for him to audition for films. However, his parents would often prevent him from taking parts that he had been chosen for because they didn't want his studies and normal life to be interrupted. Jake Gyllenhaal was able to appear in several films during his childhood, however. His first film role was in the Billy Crystal comedy "City Slickers" when he was eleven years old.
After graduating from Harvard-Westlake School in L.A., Jake Gyllenhaal went to Columbia University, but soon dropped out to pursue acting. He quickly starred in "October Sky", which received excellent reviews and was fairly successful with audiences. His next major role was in "Donnie Darko", a bizarre science fiction movie that didn't do well during its theatre run but became one of the more popular cult classics of the next ten years. Jake Gyllenhaal's next few roles didn't do nearly as well, but he came back into the limelight with his appearance in "Brokeback Mountain", a controversial film about gay cowboys that seized America's attention and won many awards. He also was well reviewed in the film "Jarhead" about the life of U.S. Marines stationed in Iraq during the Gulf War, and was almost picked to star in the new "Spiderman" films when Toby MacGuire's health was called into question.
As of early 2007 Jake Gyllenhaal continues to appear in films, most recently having appeared in the movie "Zodiac", which met with moderate box office success and positive reviews.
