Jacqueline Kennedy was the First Lady of the United States of America, the wife of John. F. Kennedy Jr. She later married famous shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and was known as Jackie Onassis until her death in 1994.
Jacqueline Kennedy was born Jacqueline Lee Bouvier in Southampton, New York in the year 1929. Her birthday is the twenty eighth of July. Jacqueline Kennedy's father was a successful and wealthy New York City stockbroker, and Jacqueline Kennedy was born into high society. Her childhood hobbies were reading, painting and writing poems.
At 18, Jacqueline Kennedy attended Vassar College, and upon graduation was named "Debutante of the Year". She also went to the University of Grenoble and the Sorbonne in Paris, and to George Washington University in Washington D.C. In 1951, she got a job for "The Washington Times-Herald" as a witty interviewer for short profiles on people living in Washington D.C. This job introduced her to her future husband John F. Kennedy, then a U.S. Senator.
In 1953, Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy were married. John F. Kennedy would go on to be President of the United States of America from 1961 until 1963, when he was assassinated. During these years, Jacqueline Kennedy made the Presidency more involved in the culture of the nation, inviting many artists, musicians, poets, writers and scientists to appear at state functions. After the assassination, Jacqueline Kennedy led the country in mourning. She compared the years of the Kennedy Presidency to the myth of Camelot. Jacqueline Kennedy's grace and the youth and dynamism of the Kennedy family, along with the sudden loss of J.F.K., has caused the Kennedy years to become legendary and iconic in American culture.
Jacqueline Kennedy had three children: Arabella, Caroline Bouvier, John Fitzgerald and Patrick Bouvier. As of 2007, Caroline Bouvier Kennedy is the only surviving child. In 1994, Jacqueline Kennedy died of cancer. She is remembered for her historical significance as a protector of America's cultural heritage sites and for the changes she made in public perception and the role of the Presidency.
