Biography
Jacky Cheung is a singer and actor. He is best known to Hong Kong audiences, among whom he is sometimes referred to as the "God of Songs".
Jacky Cheung was born Jacky Cheung Hok Tau in Hong Kong in the year 1961. His birthday is the tenth of July. He began his singing career during the mid eighties, when he won Hong Kong's national singing competition out of a group of over ten thousand singers. Jacky Cheung's first two albums were great sellers, but he suffered a dip in popularity because of a serious drinking problem and was unable to surpass the other major Cantonese pop singers, including Leslie Cheung and Alan Tam. Jacky Cheung publicly quit drinking cold turkey and did not drink again until he was forty years old.
During the early nineties, Jacky Cheung's career took off. In 1992 Jacky Cheung released the two highest selling albums in Hong Kong history, "True Love Expression" and "Love Sparks". In 1995 and 1996, Jacky Cheung was the best selling Chinese singer in the World Music Awards. His albums throughout the nineties have continued to be great successes, including "Me and You" and "Wolf Tale", and his single "Goodbye Kiss" set a record by selling five million copies in 1993. Jacky Cheung's discography now includes dozens of albums, and he has continued to release them at a steady pace throughout the late nineties and past the turn of the millennium.
Among Jacky Cheung's other accomplishments have been various movie appearances, including "As Tears Go By" in 1988 and "Swordsman" in 1990. As of 2004, he has also been made the spokesperson for Hong Kong Disneyland and has been active in the Walt Disney Company's local marketing of the park.
As of early 2007 Jacky Cheung continues to work in music, record and perform extensively.
