Biography
Jackson Browne is a singer / songwriter whose works were very successful during the late sixties and early seventies. Many of his songs were popularly performed by pop rock bands and musicians of that period, including The Eagles, The Byrds, Linda Ronstadt and Tom Rush.
Jackson Browne was born in Heidelberg, Germany in the year 1948 to American parents stationed there. His birthday is the ninth of October. While he was born abroad, Jackson Browne grew up around Los Angeles. He joined the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, a long running country-folk-rock band at the time of its creation in 1966. During the late sixties he found work writing songs for the Nina Music label, and his works were performed by artists such as Joan Baez, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and the Byrds. At the beginning of the seventies Jackson Browne worked in New York City for a short period, appearing on Nico's "Chelsea Girl" and in the back-up band for Tim Buckley.
Signing a record contract with Asylum Records in 1971, Jackson Browne released his eponymous debut album. Two songs from the album "Jackson Browne", "Rock Me on the Water" and "Doctor My Eyes", were radio hits. While his next few albums were not as successful, they were critically well received; these albums included "For Everyman", "Late for the Sky" and "The Pretender". The title track from "Late for the Sky" was used in the soundtrack of the film "Taxi Driver" directed by Martin Scorsese, while "The Pretender" was written after his wife committed suicide. These albums became progressively darker.
Jackson Browne's next album would be his greatest commercial success: "Running on Empty", released in 1977. The greatest hit of his career would be "Somebody's Baby", which appeared on the soundtrack of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" in 1981. While Jackson Browne continued to release albums throughout the eighties and nineties which were critically acclaimed, he has not attained the same level of fame he once had.
As of early 2007 Jackson Browne continues to produce music, having released his most recent album "Solo Acoustic, Vol. 1" in 2005.
