Biography
Jackie Chan is an internationally famous actor. He is best known for his numerous appearances in martial arts movies, where he does most of his own stunts. In Asia, he is also a popular singer. Jackie Chan is one of the world's top Asian movie stars.
Jackie Chan was born on Victoria Peak, Hong Kong in the year 1954. His birthday is the seventh of April. As a child, Jackie Chan studied martial arts at the Peking Opera School. He excelled there and ultimately became one of the "Seven Little Fortunes", the top martial arts students of the school who went on tour performing fighting demonstrations and acrobatics. The other students in the "Seven Little Fortunes" included future martial arts movie stars Yuen Qiu, Corey Yuen and Yuen Wah.
Throughout the seventies, it was hard for Jackie Chan to find work because the Chinese Opera style was not very popular; however, Jackie Chan did find occasional work as a stuntman on movies including "Enter the Dragon". After going through a rough patch, Jackie Chan became an international phenomenon for his starring appearances in the films "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow" and "Drunken Master", both counted among the best martial arts films of all time and released in 1978. The movies were directed and choreographed by Yuen Woo-Ping, who would go on to become the fighting coordinator for the "Matrix" movies.
The eighties were a period of rising success, as Jackie Chan appeared in the "Lucky Stars" trilogy in Asia as well as Hollywood movies including "Cannonball Run", "Battle Creek Brawl" and "The Protector". Jackie Chan became well known as the comedic everyman of martial arts films. He became better known in the west as an action star with the movie "Rumble in the Bronx" in 1995, a year after he had been given a Lifetime Achievement Award by MTV for his martial arts films. Since then he has popularly appeared in the "Rush Hour" series with Chris Tucker, as well as "Shanghai Knights" opposite Owen Wilson.
As of early 2007 Jackie Chan continues to work prolifically in film and will soon be appearing in "Rush Hour 3" and the computer generated film "Kung Fu Panda".
