Biography
Jack Brabham is a famous race car driver. Born in the 1920s, his career reached its peak during the late fifties and mid sixties when repeatedly became Formula One champion. He is a member of the Order of the British Empire, and has been named Australian Man of the Year.
Jack Brabham was born in Sydney, Australia in the year 1926. His birthday is the second of April. Never graduating high school, Jack Brabham became an auto repair mechanic when he was fifteen years old. Jack Brabham opened his own auto repair business in 1946 when he returned from serving in the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War.
After a decade of racing midget cars and winning the New South Wales Championship, Jack Brabham started his pro race car driving career in the year 1955 where he drove a Maserati 250F at the British Grand Prix. He became a driver for the Cooper Car Company, an arrangement that would last until he started racing under his own Brabham Racing Organization in 1962. The cars that he raced for the Cooper Car Company were the first to position the engine in the rear for improved traction, now a common Formula One design. Jack Brabham won the World Championship in 1959 and 1960 driving for the Cooper Car Company.
Throughout the early sixties, Jack Brabham raced for his own Brabham Racing Organization but faced problems finding wins. Jack Brabham has been said to have been unwilling to spend money during this period, and as a result his cars tended to be unreliable. He also had trouble handling the new Formula One engine limit of 1500cc. When the engine limit was changed again with the creation of the 3000cc limit in 1966, Jack Brabham finally won another championship. He became the first pro race car driver to win the championship in his own car. Four years later, Jack Brabham retired from racing after sustaining some injuries.
As of early 2007 Jack Brabham is still alive. He has been repeatedly honored as a part of pro racing history. In 1990, Jack Brabham was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
