Isiah Thomas was born Isiah Lord Thomas III in Chicago, Illinois in the year 1961. His birthday is the thirtieth of April. Isiah Thomas played basketball while going to high school at St. Joseph Catholic High School. During his time there he was an All-American guard. After graduating, Isiah Thomas enrolled at Indiana University and played on the team there. While he was chosen to represent America on the Olympic basketball team in 1980, the United States was protesting the games that year (which were held in Moscow) because the Soviet Union had recently invaded Afghanistan.
In 1980, Isiah Thomas became the first college freshman to win All-Big Ten honors. The next year he was named an All-American and played in the championship, winning the title of NCAA Basketball Tournament Most Outstanding Player. In 1981, Isiah Thomas left Indiana University to join the NBA (years later he finished his degree).
Isiah Thomas was signed by the Detroit Pistons that year. He played with the Pistons his entire NBA professional career from 1981 to 1994. Isiah Thomas is considered one of the fifty greatest basketball players of all time. He was named an NBA All-Star twelve times and Most Valuable Player twice. He is also thought of as the greatest Detroit Piston of all time, and his number 11 was retired by the team after his departure. After leaving the Detroit Pistons, Isiah Thomas continued in other jobs related to basketball including acting as executive vice president of the Toronto Raptors and coach of the Indiana Pacers. He also temporarily owned the Continental Basketball Association and worked as a television commentator alongside Bob Costas.
As of early 2007 Isiah Thomas works with the NBA's New York Knicks as president of basketball operations and as head coach. He has been a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame since the year 2000, when he first became eligible.
