Biography
Isaac Asimov was a famous science fiction author. He is considered one of the top three most well known authors of science fiction in history, along with Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke. While he was extraordinarily prolific during his life, he is best known for his "Foundation" series of books. Isaac Asimov is also credited with inventing the Three Laws of Robotics which have had a strong influence on subsequent science fiction, and many of his best known short stories involve the rule based psychology of robots.
Isaac Asimov was born in Russia in the year 1920. His birthday is the first of January. When he was three, Isaac Asimov's family moved to the United States. He first became interested in science fiction writing when he read pulp magazines that were sold in the candy store that his family ran. He sold his first stories to science fiction magazines when he was nineteen, the same year that he graduated from Columbia University. A decade later he returned to Columbia and earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry, becoming a professor at the Boston University School of Medicine where he was allowed to focus primarily on his successful writing career.
Isaac Asimov's science fiction writing came in two primary periods. The first period was from 1939 and continued through the forties and fifties. The second period started in the eighties and continued until his death, during which time he built his earlier works into larger universes with sequels and prequels. In addition to his famous "Foundation" series and many robot related short stories, Isaac Asimov wrote for many years on scientific and medical topics and also wrote many history books on ancient civilizations and cultures, including "The Greeks: A Great Adventure", "The Roman Republic", and "Asimov's Guide to the Bible". Isaac Asimov died at the age of 72 on April 6, 1992 from what was later revealed to be AIDS from a blood transfusion during a heart operation, but was covered up at the time because of prejudice associated with the disease. He has received dozens of literary awards, fourteen honorary university degrees, and in 1997 was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.
