Biography
Irene Cara is a singer / songwriter. She has also appeared in various television programs and movies. She is best known for being the cowriter of "Flashdance... What a Feeling", a hit song from the soundtrack of the movie "Flashdance" that was one of the most popular American films of the early eighties, and for starring in the movie "Fame" which spawned a play, an off-Broadway musical and a television series.
Irene Cara was born in the Bronx neighborhood of New York City in the year 1964. Her birthday is the eighteenth of March. Irene Cara learned to play piano by ear at the age of five, and took an interest in performing, learning dance and acting in addition to music. As a child she made her first professional appearances dancing and singing on Spanish language TV, and recorded commercially released albums before she was 10. She also appeared on the nationally broadcast PBS educational program "The Electric Company".
At the age of sixteen, Irene Cara became famous in the starring role of the movie "Fame". She sang the two top hit singles, "Fame" and "Out Here on My Own" on the soundtrack album, which sold millions of copies. That year both songs would be nominated for an Academy Award ("Fame" won), and Irene Cara received the 1980 Grammys for Best New Female Artist and Best New Pop Artist. She received many other awards over the following years, including being named "Top New Single Artist" by Billboard Magazine and "Top Female Vocalist" by Cashbox Magazine.
Irene Cara was phenomenally successful again three years later when she won the Academy Award for Best Song, the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, and the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, among others, on the strength of the song "Flashdance... What a Feeling" that led the "Flashdance" movie soundtrack.
She continued to release solo albums throughout the eighties and contributed songs and voice acting parts to various films over the next twenty years. As of early 2007 Irene Cara continues to produce music and makes occasional TV appearances.
