India.Arie is a Grammy award winning rhythm and blues singer, songwriter, musician and record producer.
India.Arie was born in Denver Colorado on October 3, 1975 to a singer mother and basketball playing father. She showed early musical interests. Her mother was a singer in the 1960s and encouraged her gifts. Her parents divorced when she was young and India.Arie moved with her mother and brother to Georgia. While attending the Savannah School of Art and Design, she developed an interest in guitar and began writing her own songs. She co-founded the Atlanta-based musical collective GroovementEarthseed, which released her debut song and led to a gig playing in the Lilith Fair. In 1999, a Universal/Motown music scout caught one of India.Arie's performances. This led to a meeting with former Motown CEO Kedar Massenberg.
Her first album, Acoustic Soul, was released in 2001 and debuted at number ten on the U.S. Billboard Top 200 list. She was nominated for several Grammy's that year, but did not win any of them. In 2002 came her second release, Voyage To India. The album debuted at number six on Billboard's charts and earned to Grammy wins: Best R&B Album and Best Urban/Alternative Performance. Her third album, Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship, was released in 2006 and marked the first time an India.Arie album reached number one on Billboard's charts.
Several times India.Arie has collaborated on projects with other artists. In 2001, she performed with John Mellencamp on his song Peaceful World. She has also collaborated with Cassandra Wilson, Sergio Mendes and Stevie Wonder. Their duet "A Time To Love", which was written by India.Arie was nominated for but did not win the Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2006.
She is expected to release Testimony: Vol. 2, Love and Politics sometime in 2007.
