Biography
Imelda Marcos is the former First Lady of the Philippines. She is known as the "Steel Butterfly" and is best known for her amazing shoe collection.
Imelda Marcos was born in Manila at the San Juan de Dios Hospital on July 2, 1929. She grew up near San Miguel Church which is near the Malacanang Palace. Her mother died when she was young and Imelda's father moved the family to Leyte to live with relatives. There, she earned a bachelor's degree in education from St. Paul's College.
When she was 18 years old, Imelda Marcos won her first beauty pageant and went on to become Miss Leyte. In 1953, she traveled to Manila and was named "Archit of Manila" after losing the Miss Manila competition.
In 1954 while still in Manila, Imelda Marcos met then-Congressman Ferdinand Marcos. They married after knowing one another only a few months at the Manila Pro-Cathedral Church. President Ramon Magsaysay was the principal sponsor. They have three biological children and one adopted child. In 1965, Ferdinand Marcos became the tenth President of the Philippines. Together, they ruled the Philippines for more than 20 years.
In 1972, Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law in the country and slayed his political opponents. During this time, Imelda Marcos assumed a public role in the government. She was appointed Governor of Metropolitan Manila, Minister of Human Settlement, Member of the Interim Batasang Pambansa (Philippine Parliament) and Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary by her husband. She was later appointed a Special Envoy and became instrumental in opening diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China, the Soviet Union and several Soviet satellite states.
In 1986, Ferdinand Marcos' regime was toppled and the family fled to Hawaii. He was succeeded by Corazon Aquino, who created a commission to investigate the huge wealth of the Marcos family. Imelda Marcos has insisted that her husband accumulated the family's wealth as a gold trader. However, the Bureau of Internal Revenue has no record of the family declaring or paying taxes on any assets. In 1989, Ferdinand Marcos died in exile. His remains were not allowed to be repatriated, and Imelda Marcos was not allowed to return to the Philippines until 1991.
In 1992, Imelda Marcos ran for president of the Philippines and finished fifth in a seven-way race. Fidel Ramos won the election.
After fleeing the palace, it was disclosed that Imelda Marcos owned 15 mink coats, more than 500 gowns, 800 handbangs and more than 1,000 pairs of shoes. Her extravagant lifestyle reportedly includes million dollar shopping tours to New York, Rome and Copenhagen. She bought several properties in Manhattan in the 1980s and reportedly sent a plane to Australia simply to get white sand. Many of her properties and jewels were later seized and sold.
