Biography
Iman is a model, author, actress and business woman. She is best known for her photo layouts of the 1970s and 1980s.
Iman was born in Mogadishu, Somalia on July 25, 1955. Her father was the Somalia ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Iman attended school in Egypt. The family moved to Nairobi, Kenya. There, Iman attended the University Of Nairobi, where she studied political science. Iman is fluent in five languages. While attending university, she was recruited to become a model by photographer Peter Beard.
Once she was discovered, Iman moved to the United States and began modeling. Her first big spread came in 1976 for Vogue magazine and instantly caught the eye of several designers. Over the course of her 14 year modeling career, Iman was a muse for designers like Calvin Klein, Versace and Donna Karan. In 1991, she made the move to acting and has appeared in films Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), Heart of Darkness (1994) and Exit To Eden (1994). She also lent her voice to the computer game Omikron - The Nomad Soul. She has also made guest appearances on the reality show Project Runway.
In 2001, she published her first book I am Iman. The books was successful. She also wrote Beauty of Color: The Ultimate Beauty Guide for Skin of Color (2006).
Iman is also a business woman. In 1994, she founded IMAN Cosmetics, Skincare and Fragrances. It was the first cosmetics firmed created specifically for women of color. She is also the spokesperson for Keep A Child Alive, a program and provides medication for HIV/AIDS children and families in Africa and India.
In 1977 she married former basketball player Spencer Haywood. They had a daughter, born in 1978. The couple divorced in 1987. In 1992 she married rock star David Bowie. They have a daughter.
