Iggy Pop is a rock singer and songwriter who is sometimes called the Godfather of Punk. He was the lead singer for The Stooges in the 1960s and 1970s, but his best known singles are from his solo career and include Lust for Life, Real Wild Child and Candy.
Iggy Pop, born James Newell Osterberg, JR, was born in Muskegon, Michigan on April 21, 1947. Iggy Pop began his music career in high school by playing in different bands around Ann Arbor, Michigan, it was with the band The Iguanas that his nickname Iggy came about. He attended but dropped out of the University of Michigan and later moved to Chicago. There he began performing as Iggy Pop. There he created The Stooges who were signed to Elektra Records in 1968. The recorded two albums that were not well received. In 1973 their third album, recorded with David Bowie in England was released. Raw Power became their first hit album. The Stooges broke up after the recording, however, because of Iggy Pop's drug abuse and he went on to a solo career.
In 1977 he released Kill City. The drug problems remained and he checked himself in to a mental institution to clean up. Later that year he signed with RCA Records and the albums The Idiot and Lust for Life were released. They are Iggy Pop's best known records. David Bowie and Iggy Pop continued working together. In 1979, he left RCA Records and signed with Arista, where he release New Values. In 1982 he released Zombie Birdhouse, it was the last album he created for several years.
In addition to music, Iggy Pop has appeared in several movies including The Color of Money, Cry-Baby, Snow Day and Coffee and Cigarettes. He has also appeared in several television shows including Tales from the Crypt and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
