Biography
Ice Cube is a rapper, actor and film director who is best known as a founding member of the controversial rap group N.W.A., and one of the rappers to begin gangsta rap.
Ice Cube, born O'Shea Jackson, was born in Los Angeles, California on June 15, 1969. He was raised in South Central Los Angeles and at 16 began experimenting with hip hop music. He attended Taft High School where he began writing raps and later attended the Phoenix Institute of Technology. There he studied architectural drafting. At the Institute, he and a friend formed the group C.I.A. The group performed at local parties where Wreckin' Cru member Dr. Dre found them.
In 1987, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre released his first mix tape, My Posse, the single became the first release from N.W.A. Their 1989 album Straight Outta Compton became a landmark rap album, but in 1990 with friction between Ice Cube and group manager Jerry Heller, Cube left the group.
Ice Cube struck out on his solo career in New York. AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted was released in 1990. The album was rife with controversy including anti-white racism and misogyny. His follow up effort, Death Certificate, in 1991 was even more controversial. In 1992 he toured with Lollapalooza which grew his fan base even more. That year, he converted to Islam and later that year released The Predator, his third album. After his third album, the fan base began to shrink and his fourth album Lethal Injection imitated Dr. Dre's G-Funk sound. In 1994 he took a break from music to concentrate on acting. He returned to the studio in 1998 to release War & Peace Volume 1, the sequel, War & Peace Volume 2 was released in 2000. Ice Cube's eighth solo album, Laugh Now, Cry Later, was released in 2006 and debuted at number four on the Billboard charts. It has been certified gold.
Ice Cube's film work has also been well received. In 1992, he got his first big film break when he was cast in the hit Boyz N the Hood. Roles in Trespass, The Glass Shield, Friday and Friday After Next followed. He also appeared in Anaconda and Higher Learning, and in 1998, made his directorial debut in The Players Club. In 1999, Ice Cube starred in Three Kings. He also starred in Barbershop, Barbershop 2: Back in Business, XXX: State of the Union and Are We There Yet? In 2007, films Prince of Compton and Welcome Back, Kotter will be released.
In 2000 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award (with Dr. Dre) from the Hip Hop Music Awards and in 2005, Ice Cube was awarded the Soul Train Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award.
