Biography
Hugo Weaving is a film and stage actor who is best known for her roles in the hit films The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings (all three movies) and V for Vendetta.
Hugo Weaving was born in Nigeria on April 4, 1960. His parents were English, but he spent several childhood years in South Africa before moving to England in his teens. When he was fifteen, he was diagnosed with epilepsy. In 1976, the family moved to Australia where he completed his education at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1981.
In 1984, Hugo Weaving won his first major role in the television series Bodyline and in 1988 appeared in the Australian miniseries The Dirtwater Dynasty. Next came a role in Bangkok Hilton in 1989 and in 1991, a role in the low-budget flick Proof, the role helped him win the Best Actor award from the Australian Film Institute.
In 1993, Hugo Weaving appeared in Reckless Kelly. His breakout role came in 1994 with Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. He won the Montreal Film Festival's Best Actor award in 1998 for his role in The Interview and in 1999 became a household name with a role in The Matrix as Smith. He reprised the role for The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. In 2001, he won the role of Elrond in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He also provides the voice for Elrond in a Lord of the Rings video game. In 2006, he starred in V for Vendetta.
In addition to roles on film, Hugo Weaving is also an accomplished stage actor. He is currently working on a production of Hedda Gabler in New York City.
