Biography
Hugh Laurie is an award winning English actor and writer. He is best known in Europe for his roles in Blackadder and in best known in the United States and Canada for his role in the television medical drama House, MD.
Hugh Laurie was born in Oxford, England on June 11, 1959. He attended the Dragon School before finishing his primary education at Eton. He then attended Selwyn College in Cambridge where he received the Third Class Honours degree in Archaeology and Anthropology. He was a talented athlete during his school years, participating in rowing. In 1977 he and his coxed pair rowing partner won the English national title and went on to represent England's Youth Team at the 1977 World Championships. He is a member of the Leander Club, a very old rowing club. When he was forced to give up rowing after becoming ill with mononucleosis, he discovered acting.
In 1982 he was given the Perrier Award for The Cellar Tapes, which led to appearances in Alfresco, a comedy show. With writing partner Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie created the Blackadder series, A Bit of Fry and Laurie and Jeeves and Wooster. His film roles include Sense and Sensibility, Maybe Baby and the three Stuart Little films. In 2004 he became a well known actor in the United States when he won a role in the Fox medical drama House, MD, for which he won a SAG award and was nominated for an Emmy. The role also won two Golden Globe awards, two Satellite Awards and two Television Critics Association awards.
In 1996, he published his first novel, The Gun Seller, and is currently working on a screen play.
Hugh Laurie married Jo Green in 1989. They have three children (a daughter and two sons) and live in London. In addition to acting, he is a talented musician, playing guitar, harmonica, piano and saxophone. He was awarded an OBE for his services to drama on the 2007 New Year Honours List.
