Biography
Hugh Hefner is a publisher who is best known as the founder and editor in chief of Playboy Magazine.

Hugh Hefner was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 9, 1926. He attended Sayre Elementary School and later Steinmetz High School. He joined the Army and served during the final days of World War II. After being released from military service, Hugh Hefner attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he majored in psychology. While in school, he edited the magazine Shaft and sold cartoons to magazines. He graduated and then finished one semester of graduate-level courses in sociology and women and gender studies at Northwestern University. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1949. Later that year, he married Mildred Williams. They had two children and divorced in 1959.

Hugh Hefner worked in the subscription department of Esquire magazine but left the company in 1952. He then worked at Children's Activities and in 1953, raised $10,000 and leapt into publishing with Playboy. The first centerfold (Charlaine Karalus, who posed under the name Janet Pilgrim) was actually an employee of the magazine who requested a copy machine. In 1958, Hugh Hefner faced his first legal action when a teen and her mother were arrested after photos of the girl appeared in Playboy. The magazine continued to flourish.

In 1979, the Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Awards were created to honor those who have a significant contribution to enhancing First Amendment rights.

In 1989, Hugh Hefner became a husband again, marrying Kimberley Conrad, that year's Playmate of the Year. They separated in 1998 but have not divorced. They have two children. Hugh Hefner currently has a string of girlfriends who share time with him.
