Howard Shore is an award winning film composer from Canada. He is best known for composing the scores for films such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Silence of the Lambs.

Howard Shore was born in Toronto, Canada on October 18, 1946. He attended the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston. Between 1969 and 1972 he was a member of the group Lighthouse. He received his first break into film by composing the music for magician Doug Henning's magic and musical fest called Spellbound. From 1975 through 1980 he was the musical director for Saturday Night Live and appeared in several sketches. He actually suggest the name "Blues Brothers" to Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi.

His first big break came from composing the musical score for The Fly in 1986. Next came The Silence of the Lambs in 1989. A string of hits followed including Se7en (1995), High Fidelity (2000), Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004) and The Departed 2006). His score for The Aviator earned a Golden Globe award.

His most successful film score to date is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. In 2002, he earned an Academy award for the first film (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring). He earned two more Academy Awards for the final installment (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) in 2004. He also won four Grammy Awards and two Golden Globes for these musical scores.

In 2004, Howard Shore began a tour featuring orchestral arrangements from his Lord of the Rings pieces.

Howard Shore continues working on film scores, and in also currently at work on his first opera. The opera has been commissioned by Theatre du Chatelet in Paris and the Los Angeles Opera.
