Biography
Dame Helen Mirren is an Academy Award winning actress. She has won four SAG Awards, BAFTA Awards, Emmy Awards and Golden Globe Awards through her career.

Helen Mirren, born Ilyena Vasilievna Mironov, was born in Ilford, Essex in England on July 26, 1945. Her father, a Russian immigrant, changed the family name to Mirren in the 1950s. She attended school in Southend-on-Sea and later attended a teaching college in London. At the age of 18 she auditioned for and was accepted to the National Youth Theatre. In 1997 she married director Taylor Hackford. In 2003 she was invested as a Dame Commander of the British Empire.

Helen Mirren's first starring role was as Cleopatra for a performance with the National Youth Theatre. This led to her stay with the Royal Shakespeare Company where she starred in Troilus and Cressida and Lady Macbeth. In 1972 she joined the International Centre for Theatre Research and toured North Africa. She was nominated for Tony Awards in 1995 for A Month in the Country and in 2002 for Dance of Death.

Off-stage, she has appeared in several feature films including Excalibur, White Nights and Mosquito Coast. More recently, she starred in Calendar Girls, Gosford Park, Raising Helen and The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. She won the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in 2006s The Queen. She also received a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Mini-Series for the 1997 role in Losing Chase. In 2006, she won an Emmy for her role in Elizabeth I. She also won Emmy Awards for her roles in Prime Suspect: Scent of Darkness and The Passion of Ayn Rand.
