Heath Ledger is an Academy Award nominated actor from Australia. He is best known for his roles in The Patriot and Brokeback Mountain.
Heath Ledger was born in Perth, Australia on April 4, 1979. He was raised in western Australia where he attended school in Gooseberry Hill. He left school at the age of 16, after an early graduation, to pursue acting. In 1996, he broke into Australia's consciousness with a role in the Aussie television series Sweat.
His first break came in 1999 with the American teen movie 10 Things I Hate About You. The same year he starred in the Australian movie Two Hands. In 2000 he was cast in the Mel Gibson drama The Patriot. The role earned him a ShoWest Award for Male Star of Tomorrow. Heath Ledger followed that hit with roles in Monster's Ball, A Knight's Tale and The Four Feathers.
In 2003 he was named one of Australian GQ's Men of the Year for acting. In 2005 he was nominated for Academy and Golden Globe awards for his role in Brokeback Mountain. He received Best Actor of 2005 awards from the New York Film Critics Circle and the San Francisco Film Critics Circle. Several more films are due out in 2007.
Heath Ledger also works behind the camera. He recently directed the video for "Morning Yearning", a Ben Harper song.
