Harvey Keitel is an Academy Award-nominated actor who is best known for his roles in Taxi Driver, and Bugsy. His role in Bugsy garnered him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Harvey Keitel was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 13, 1939. He and his two siblings were raised in the Brighton Beach area of the city. He joined the Marine Corps at the age of sixteen. Upon the completion of his military service, he began working as a court reporter in New York City. He also began studying acting and landed a few roles in off-Broadway plays. This is where he met struggling filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who cast Harvey Keitel in his first film Who's That Knocking At My Door. The two have continued working together throughout their careers.
Harvey Keitel's first big role was in Taxi Driver, but his breakthrough film role turned out to be farther down the road. He continued working with small roles in films until 1992 when he was cast in Reservoir Dogs. This led to a role in Thelma & Louise and his Academy Award nominated role in Bugsy. After these action oriented films, Harvey Keitel turned his attention to a broader base of movies with roles in The Piano, Pulp Fiction, Little Nicky, U-571 and National Treasure. He has appeared nude in several films, unlike many other male American actors.
Harvey Keitel married actress Lorraine Bracco, with whom he had a daughter. The two later divorced. In 2001 he married Daphna Kastner, the two have a son. Harvey Keitel also has a son from his relationship with Lisa Karmazin.
