Harry Harrison is a science fiction author who is best known for his novel Make Room! Make Room. The book was the basis for the 1973 movie Soylent Green.
Harry Harrison was born in Stamford, Connecticut on March 12, 1925. When he was two years old, his family moved to Brooklyn, New York where he was raised. On his eighteenth birthday, Harry Harrison was drafted into the military. He served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II as a gunnery sergeant. He married in 1954. His wife, Joan, died in 2002 of cancer. They have two children.
He got his start in science fiction as an illustrator with EC Comics books Weird Fantasy and Weird Science. Several of his early stories were published under house pseudonyms. In addition to his work with EC Comics, Harry Harrison create the "Rick Random" syndicated comic strip character. In the 1950s and 1960s he was also the main writer for the Flash Gordon comic strip.
Comics aren't his only claim to fame, however. His Stainless Steel Rat series and the novels Make Room! Make Room! and Bill, the Galactic Hero talk about serious issues like overpopulation and natural resources. He has been nominated for several Hugo awards including two Best Novel nominations for 1961's Deathworld and 1962's Planet of the Damned. In 1971, his short story By The Falls was nominated for the Nebula Best Short Story award.
Harry Harrison is an advocate for the Esperanto language, a language that appears often in his novels. He is a past honorary president of the Esperanto Association of Ireland and holds memberships for Esperanto organizations around the world.
