Harry Connick, Jr. is a singer and actor best known for his funk and blues inspired hits.
Harry Connick, Jr. was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 11, 1967. He showed an early interest in music, learning the piano at three years of age and playing publicly for the fist time at the age of six. He recorded with a jazz band when he was ten. As a child he attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts where he was taught by Ellis Marsalis and James Booker. After high school, Harry Connick, Jr. moved to New York to study music at Hunter College and the Manhattan School of Music. There, a Columbia Records executive signed him and he released his first album. With the release of his second album, he became known as a talented jazz musician.
In 1989, Hollywood came calling in the form of director Rob Reiner who wanted Harry Connick, Jr. to provide the soundtrack for When Harry Met Sally. . . That album became a double-platinum seller and brought him his first Grammy, for Best Jazz Male Vocal Performance. The following year, Harry Connick, Jr. made his acting debut in the movie Memphis Belle.
1990 was a busy year. In addition to his role in the movie, Harry Connick, Jr. began a two year world tour to support his music and released two new albums. The single We Are In Love from the second album earned him a second Grammy for Best Jazz Male Vocal Performance. In 1991, he contributed to the Godfather III soundtrack and was nominate for Academy and Golden Globe awards. His appearance in a PBS variety special also earned him an Emmy nod. That year, he acted opposite Jodie Foster in the film Little Man Tate.
Trouble came in 1992 when Harry Connick, Jr. was arrested at JFK International Airport for having a gun in his possession. This led to his public service commercial warning about gun laws. Later that year, he released a new album and early in 1993 contributed to the Sleepless in Seattle soundtrack and released a Christmas album.
Changes came in the mid-1990s, with a fusion of funk and jazz. Audiences loved the combination and the 1994 album She went platinum. A tour in the United Kingdom followed, but fans overseas didn't like the new fusion of sound. In 1995, Harry Connick, Jr. broke another mold, starring as a homicidal killer in the thriller Copycat and in 1996 starred opposite Will Smith in the action hit Independence Day.
In 1997, Harry Connick, Jr. changed his colors again, release original love songs on his To See You album with a full symphony backing him. The movie Hope Floats brought Harry more fame in 1998 and cemented his place in female hearts. Later that year, he released the big band album Come By Me. In 2001, his attention turned to the stage when he scored the Broadway musical Thou Shalt Not. Television called and from 2002 to 2006 he placed a supporting role on the sitcom Will & Grace.
Harry Connick, Jr. also gives back to the community. After Hurricane Katrina wiped out much of the Gulf Coast in 2005, he helped organize an NBC telethon concert. The same year, he was named honorary chair of Habitat for Humanity's Operation Home Delivery, a rebuilding plan for Katrina victims.
In 1994, Harry Connick, Jr. married Jill Goodacre. The two have three daughters and reside in New Canaan, Connecticut and New Orleans.
