Harrison Ford is an American actor who is best known for his work in film series such as Star Wars and the Indiana Jones movies.
Harrison Ford was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 13, 1942. As a boy, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America. He graduated from Maine East High School in Illinois in 1960. While in school, he became the first student broadcaster on the school's radio station. He was also the radio stations first sportscaster. After high school, Harrison Ford attending Ripon College in Wisconsin where he became interested in drama. He was also a member of The Brothers Gross folk band. He did not graduate from college because in 1964 he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting.
Once in Los Angeles, Harrison Ford signed a contract with Columbia Pictures. The deal paid him $150 per week and gave him a shot at roles in several films, some of the roles were uncredited. His first acting credit was as "Harrison J. Ford" in the western A Time For Killing. The "J" in his name was added to avoid confusion with another actor of the same name; Harrison Ford doesn't have a middle name. The "other" Harrison Ford died in 1957. Soon after, Harrison Ford dropped the "J" from his name and continued acting with Universal Studios as a bit player throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
Because of the small roles and smaller pay, he became a skilled carpenter to support his wife and two sons. His big break came in 1973 when George Lucas, who had hired him to build cabinets, cast him in American Graffiti. Small roles followed, but none were break out roles until Harrison Ford was cast in Star Wars in 1975. His role as Han Solo became a break out vehicle and led to his being cast as Indiana Jones in 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark, two sequels followed that role and Harrison Ford became a household name. Action roles carried Harrison Ford through the 1980s and in the early 1990's he was cast as Jack Ryan, a government agent in a series of movies based on Tom Clancy's novels.

Despite his success, Harrison Ford has only been nominated for one Academy Award. The Best Actor nomination came from his role in Witness in the late 1980s.
