Biography
Hamid Karzai is the President of Afghanistan, the first president of the country since the Taliban regime was ousted. In 2001 he took over as the Chairman of the Transitional Administration and also served as Interim President from 2002 until he won the 2004 Presidential election.

Hamid Karzai was born in Kandahar, Afghanistan on December 24, 1957. He is an ethnic Pashtun and a member of the influential Popalzai tribe. His family were strong supporters of King Zahir Shah. From 1979-1983, he studied Political Science at Himachal University in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. After finishing his studies, he returned to his country and supported the anti-Soviet uprisings throughout the 1980s. In 1992, Najibullah's government fell and Hamid Karzai began serving the government as a deputy foreign minister under the new governing body.

In the 1990s, the Taliban regime appeared as leaders in the country and Hamid Karzai was initially a supporter of their cause. He broke away from them when their close ties to Pakistan were revealed. In 1996, the Taliban ousted then-president Burhanuddi Rabbini, and he refused to continue serving as their United Nations Ambassador. From that moment he lived in exile in Quetta, Pakistan and worked to reinstate Zahir Shah. In 1999, his father was assassinated, presumably by the Taliban, and Hamid Karzai began working even harder to remove them from power.

After the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, Karzai loyalists and Majuhideen loyal to the Afghan Northern Alliance began working with United States forced to overthrow the Taliban. In December 2001, Afghan political leaders agreed to form a new government. Known as the Bonn Agreement, because it was signed in Bonn, Germany, the group formed an interim government and named Hamid Karzai the chairman. He was later appointed interim president of the country and in 2004, won the country's first national election since the Taliban had taken over in the 1990's.

There have been two attempted assassination attempts on his life. In 2006, Hamid Karzai told the United Nations that terrorism was making a rebound attempt to control Afghanistan. He asked that NATO and U.S.-led forces be very careful when conducting military missions in residential areas, because civilian casualties undermine his government.

In 1999, Hamid Karzai married Zeenat Karzai, a doctor, in Pakistan. She was working with Afghan refugees and he was living in exile at the time. The two have a son, Mirwais, born in 2007. Mirwais is named from a famous Afghan king.
