Biography
Although her name is not as readily identified, Gro Harlem Brundtland is considered, in some circles, as influential as Pope John Paul II, Mikhail Gorbachev and Margaret Thatcher.
The Financial Times, in fact, listed the Norwegian politician, diplomat, physician and international leader in sustainable development as Europe's fourth most influential person in the world.
Born and raised in Oslo, Norway, Brundtland started her career path where she was educated in medicine a the University of Oslo. She finished there and went to Harvard University where she obtained a Master of Public Health in 1965. From there she went to work in politics and became the Norwegian Minister for Environmental Affairs from 1974 to 1979. Two years later she became Norway's first, and to date only, female prime minister. She opened the door for other female ministers at this time and media was quick to comment on the fact she had an exceptional cabinet with eight of the 18 ministers being female.
Brundtland became Norwegian Prime Minister for two subsequent terms until she was succeeded by Thorbjrn Jagland. She resigned as leader of the Labour Party in 1992.
In the years to follow she worked in a number of different capacities including Chair of the World Commission on Environment and Development. During this tenure, she developed a broad political concept on sustainable development. This served as the foundation for the 1992 Earth Summit that was headed by Maurice Strong, a prominent supporter of Brundtland and her commission.
In May 1998, Brundtland was elected Director-General of the World Health Organization. She wanted a far-reaching approach to public health at this time so established a Commission on Macroeconomics and Health which addressed violence as a significant public health issue. For this work and other significant initiatives like coordinating a rapid worldwide response to the original SARS outbreaks, she was honored by Scientific American who awarded her their distinction Policy Leader of the Year.
Brundtland is married to Arne Olav.
