Biography
Acting is considered to be a difficult skill to master by most people's standards.
It becomes even more challenging when the actor does not have lines to speak.
Greta Garbo was the superstar of silent film. She came on screen in the 1920s, when films with no dialogue were all movie fans had and her performances were described as enigmatic.
Garbo got the chance to speak her mind though as she made the transition to talking films in 1930 wit the release of Anna Christie. The film was promoted as Garbo Talks! and Garbo impressed audiences so much in it she was nominated for the Academy Award Best Actress.
Before Garbo made it that far she was struggling in Sweden with her family who was destitute due to the fact Garbo's father had died when she was only 14. Garbo was forced to leave school and work full time so she could help pay for the bills. Although she had no desire to be in film, she was thought to be a beauty and often used for modeling in newspaper ads. This sparked an interest in Garbo who decided she might like to act so she applied for a scholarship at a Swedish drama school and got it. This led to her being discovered by Swedish director Mauritz Stiller who took her away from drama school for the leading role in Gosta Berlings, a film that came out in 1924.
A year later, Garbo starred in another film and was then offered a contract with MGM Studios. She then went to the US for the film Torrent, released in 1926. Her inability to speak English was not a problem as the film was silent.
Despite this powerful start to her career, Garbo surprised everyone with retiring from the movies at only age 36 in 1941. Her last film was Two-Faced Woman Sources said she dropped out of the Hollywood scene completely and became a total recluse only to be seen occasionally tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. Greta died of pneumonia in New York City at the age of 84 on April 15, 1990.
