Biography
Sometimes a twin can be more than someone who simply resembles his counterpart physically.
In the case of American science fiction author Gregory Benford, his identical twin brother Jim has worked with him on many of his stories.
The two of them grew up immersed in books and deeply interested in science fiction, the roots of that dating back to 1965 when Benford made his first professional sale with the story Stand-In. Four years later, he was writing a sci-fi column regularly for Amazing Stories.
As an author of more than 20 novels including Jupiter Project, Artifact, Timescape and Against Infinity, Benford is best known for his work on the Galactic Center Saga novels that came out in 1977. The series' theme is about a galaxy that has organic life in constant flux with mechanical life.
As a physicist and educator, Benford stays busy at the University of California where he has been a faculty member since 1971. He conducts research in plasma turbulence theory and experiment as well as in astrophysics. More than a hundred university papers in his field hold Benford's name as author. These cover a number of different topics including plasmas and mathematical physics and biological conservation.
He has won numerous awards throughout his career which include winning the Nebula Award 12 times in all of its categories and being nominated for four Hugo Awards. In 1995, he received the Lord Foundation Award for contributions to science and the public's understanding of it.
He is a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University, and has served as an advisor to the Department of Energy, NASA and the White House Council on Space Policy.
Benford is married to Joan Abbe and the couple has been together since 1967. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Oklahoma, and a Masters of Science and Doctorate from the University of California.
