Biography
Greg Bear is a science fiction and fantasy author of more than 30 books currently sitting on store shelves.
He is known by his readers as addressing contemporary science and culture questions, however, he will explore other avenues and has done so in books like Blood Music where reality becomes unstable to those observing it.
He started writing at the age of nine when he was living in Alaska and inspired by the natural scenery surrounding him. By the time teen years rolled around, he was already submitting stories to magazines and at the age of 15, he had sold his first short story to Robert Lowndes of Famous Science Fiction.
Four years later, he had sold his first novel which appeared in publication in 1979. Since then, his books have been fast and furious and so has the recognition that goes along with that.
In 1983, he was nominated for the Nebula Award for his short story Petra. The following year, Blood Music and Hardfought won Nebula Awards for best novella and novelette. Blood Music was further recognized with a Hugo Award and its novel version won the Prix Apollo in France.
When Bear is not writing, he serves on the National Citizens Advisory Council on Space Policy which consists of scientists, military specialists, engineers, astronauts and other writers. According to Bear, this particular group contributed substantially to the end of the Cold War and advised on the future of commercial space.
He also works as a US Army and CIA consultant. Since the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist incident in New York City, he has been very busy with these groups, advising them on any and all security issues that come up.
In 1983, Bear married Astrid Anderson and the couple had their son Erik three years later. They also have a daughter who was born in 1990. The family lives just outside of Seattle, Washington.
