Biography
Few rock bands are criticized for becoming a commercial success.
But Green Day knows what that is like as they have experienced that kind of criticism throughout their career.
Those who know them classify them as punk and that's where the bitter criticism lies.
Punk icons, like those who evolved from the band the Sex Pistols, have openly challenged the band's description saying if they were true punk, they would never act the way they do.
The band's act started back in Berkeley California when they were working with independent record label Lookout! Records. It was not long before their talent was noticed and major record labels were looking to sign a deal with them.
Nevertheless took over for Lookout! Records and put Green Day on the map in terms of major fanfare appeal. Their breakthrough success album, released in 1994, sold more than 10 million copies in the US alone which allowed Green Day to take most of the credit for popularizing punk again.
If they are not touring or recording, Green Day can be found working with other artists on charitable projects. In September, 2006, they worked with the band U2 and producer Rick Rubin to record a cover of the song The Saints Are Coming. Benefits from the song were to go to the organization Music Rising which raises money for musical instruments lost during Hurricane Katrina and to bring awareness to those who may have forgotten about it.
That same year, the band helped open a website to raise awareness about America's dependency on oil.
In the future, they say they plan to release a new album, most likely in 2008.
To date, the band has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide. They have also won three Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Album, Best Rock Album and Record of the Year.
