Biography
For many basketball fans, Grant Hill is as magical on the courts as his team's name suggests.
He often leads his team in points, rebounds and assists and has been named best all-around player of his generation.
Career-threatening injuries haven't always allowed him to maintain this superior status with his NBA team Orlando Magic. But fans say no matter what kind of shape he is in, he always plays a good game.
Born October 5, 1972, Hill knew to love sports at an early age as his dad Calvin was a running back for the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. Calvin supported Hill in his efforts to dominate the field or arena when it came to sports and it showed in Hill's accomplishments.
By 1990, at his high school in Reston, Virginia, he was selected for the 1990 McDonald's All-American Team.
College for Hill was played out at Duke University where he joined the Duke Blue Devils and won national titles in both 1991 and the following year. Hill continued his winning streak with the team into 1994 when they went to the championships but ended up losing to the Arkansas Razorbacks. That year didn't end in a loss however, as Hill was drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the third pick in the NBA draft.
In his second season with the Detroit team, Hill was once again the big draw for fans casting ballots - a bigger draw even than the famed Michael Jordan.
By August 3, 2000, Hill forced the Pistons to send him to Orlando Magic. Ankle injuries, however, held him back when he first arrived to play with the team so started his Orlando career with a slow beginning.
He built up momentum though by 2004 and played 67 games for the team, well over the combined number of games he played for them previously. He averaged 19.7 points per game on a .509 field goal percentage. Fans voted him an All-Star starter again, and he led the Eastern Conference All-Star Team to a victory over the West.
He is married to R&B singer Tamia.
