Biography
Few actresses can actually say they are royalty for real.
Grace Kelly carried that distinction when she married the Prince of Monaco, Rainier II and became Her Serene Highness, the Princess of Monaco on April 19, 1956.
Prior to that she was simply known as an Academy Award winning film actress who began her career as a fashion model, something her family vehemently opposed.
Her first film, Fourteen Hours, came out when she was 22. One year later, she was starring in the masterpiece High Noon alongside Gary Cooper.
In 1955, she won Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her role in The Country Girl.
She was soon to retire from film after that and only made one more film, the musical comedy High Society, before disappearing from the Hollywood scene completely.
From the moment they were married, Kelly lived in the prince's palace Monte Carlo, Monaco and stayed there until her death in 1982. Reports were her marriage was an unhappy one and she did not appreciate having to give up her film career. That controversy was stirred up again in 1964 when director Alfred Hitchcock wanted to use her in his film Marnie. Kelly tried hard to persuade her husband and subjects but the response was a resounding no so she refused the offer. Later, she was able to act as a narrator on a few film projects including the television movie The Poppy Is Also a Flower.
The royal couple had three children Princess Caroline, Albert II and Princess Stephanie, the youngest of the three.
At age 53, Kelly died on September 14, 1982 the day after she was driving her Rover P6. Sources say she suffered a stroke at the time and drove off a cliff. She was taken to hospital and never regained consciousness. Princess Stephanie was in the car but only suffered minor injuries.
