Biography
Gordie Howe is Mr. Hockey.
Even today, long after the Detroit Red Winger's retirement from the sport, he is reminisced about among broadcasters who remember him for his physical strength and longevity.
Howe's NHL five-decade career all started in 1946 when he joined the Detroit Red Wings as their right winger at the age of 18. He dominated the ice, even then, as he was ale to make goals when nobody else could and able to intimidate opponents through sheer speed and size.
For seven consecutive years that ran fro 1948 to 1956, Howe led his team to first place and four Stanley Cups. They remained the team to beat throughout the 1950s and even into the next decade but by 1967, when Howe had turned 40, Detroit was challenged more often by the league as the number of teams had increased from six to 12. The Canadian-born player who was starting to feel his age was forced to retire by 1970 as a chronic wrist problem was making it impossible to play.
However, by 1973, Howe was offered another contract to play with the Houston Aeros, a team registered with the World Hockey Association, and he took it. Just like before, Howe led his team to consecutive championships and in 1974, Howe was named the WHA's most valuable player.
Howe was back in the NHL five years later when the WHA folded and he was given the chance to sign on for one season to play with the Hartford Whalers. At 51, Howe played all 80 games of the schedule.
At the time of his real retirement, Howe had played 2,421 games, scored 1,071 goals, assisted on 1,518 goals and finished with 2,589 points. To date, Wayne Gretzky is the only player who has passed him in scoring totals.
He holds nine NHL records and numerous awards.
Howe has been married to Colleen Joffa since April 15, 1953 and they have two sons who also play professional hockey.
