Biography
Sully Erna is more than just Godsmack's primary song writer.
He is the driving force behind the hard rock band Godsmack's evolution. After more than 23 years of sitting behind a set of drums, he decided he wanted a new band and one year later, he found what he was looking for in Godsmack.
Erna joined up with Robbie Merrill and Tony Rombola and hit the studio to record their first CD entitled All Wound Up. The first effort took all of one weekend to produce so it wasn't until two years later and the arrival of drummer Joe Darco that the band started gaining some fans.
Their live shows were considered particularly appealing in America's New England region and bigger and rowdier audiences were starting to show up. Enough fanfare built that they were able to return to the studios more serious artists and ready for a more thought out production that resulted in the ultra successful single Whatever and thousands of CD sales.
With new drummer Tommy Stewart, a new outlook and a new re-mastered CD, the group took their Voodoo Tour act on the road and enjoyed growing popularity, especially when they made appearances at shows such as Woodstock 1999, Ozzfest 1999 and 2000 and the European tour with Black Sabbath.
In 2000, Godsmack released their second CD Awake. Their Awake tour sold out arenas and outdoor venues throughout the US.
Two years later, Erna was gaining so much notice, he was asked to help out with the soundtrack for the motion picture The Scorpion King. The band's song that they wrote and performed, I Stand Alone, caught on so well it became the most played radio hit in 2002 for 14 weeks straight.
As four years of touring on the road can make anybody tired, Godsmack decided to take a break at this point but were soon back in the studio. Their drummer, Tommy Stewart, was let go before they started recording their third CD Faceless. When it hit the stores in April, 2003, it became the number one selling record in the US for the week it was released.
Godsmack released their latest CD, Godsmack IV on April 25, 2006.
