Biography
UK girl-band pop stars are still alive and well.
The latest to make the scene are Girls Aloud who consist of Nadine Elizabeth Louise Coyle, Cheryl Ann Tweedy, Sarah Nicole Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberly Jane Walsh.
They are young, energetic and like to be loud, they say.
Their short-lived musical roots, as a group anyway, began in 2002 when the British reality television show Popstars aired. The girls were among thousands of aspiring youth singers to audition. Judges plowed through the group of 10,000 and narrowed down the prospects to a final 20. At that point, the television audience was allowed to choose the winning five. They of course picked Girls Aloud as their best girl group.
On December 16 of that year, Girls Aloud released their first single. It made number one on the charts and sold a record-breaking 213,000 copies.
But it wasn't until 2003 when they decided to return to the recording studio for their first album Sound of the Underground. They were then scheduled to go on tour with the band One True Voice but the tour was canceled due to poor ticket sales.
The gaggle of girls didn't allow this to set them back much however and they toured on their own later in the spring and released the new single No Good Advice as well as the album they had produced in 2003. Their manager Louis Walsh, who had blamed One True Voice for the dismal concert sales previously, was proving to be right as both their single and album hit number two on the British charts.
The year wasn't all positive, however, and the Girls had to endure the death of their road manager John McMahon was killed when he crashed the band's van into a telephone pole. That same year, Cheryl was arrested for allegedly assaulting a 39-year-old toilet attendant and part-time law student. Her case, according to 2007 reports, is still in court.
