Biography
Giorgio Moroder has worked in almost every popular music genre that exists.
The Academy Award winning record producer and performer has a career that expands from the disco days of Donna Summer to the heavy rock era made popular by legends like Roger Daltrey and Sammy Hagar.
He started it all when he first began working with synthesizers and thereby influencing the sound of techno and electronic music for years to come. Donna Summer was made popular with his production of her songs like I Feel Love. Dozens of other musical greats like Blondie, Dave Bowie, Cheap Trick and Cher who would experience the same kind of fanfare in years to come.
Moroder was not satisfied though with just working behind stage all the time. During the 1970s, he often collaborated with lyricist Bellote to produce his own hits like Son of My Father or From Here to Eternity.
The next decade he had graduated to bigger producer and was working with The Human League, a heavily synthesized pop band led by front man Phil Oakey. Two years after this project, he turned his sights to movies and produced the score for Tom Cruise's aviation flick Top Gun. The film's song Take My Breath Away was a runaway hit for months following its release.
Other well-known films of that time, American Gigolo, Flashdance, The Never Ending Story, Thief of Hearts and Electric Dreams, had Moroder's signature scores.
In September of 2004, Moroder was honored with induction into New York's Dance Music Hall of Fame. At the awards ceremony, announcers talked about all of his outstanding achievements and contributions as producer. The following year he was awarded the title Commendatory by Azeglio Ciampi. At the same time, he also was awarded the distinction of having his work used in the video game Grand Theft Auto.
